Liquid Carbomer Decoded: Why SF-1 Is the Gold Standard for Body Soap & Hand Wash Thickeners?

2026-05-28 - Leave me a message

You’re developing a sparkling clear body wash or a creamy yet non-sticky hand wash. You need thickening, suspension for pearlescent pigments or silicone droplets, and co-emulsification – all without sacrificing transparency. Traditional powder carbomers work, but they bring dust, messy hydration, and neutralization steps. Enter liquid carbomer. And in this field, one type has become almost synonymous: SF-1.

What Is Liquid Carbomer?

A liquid carbomer is an alkali-swellable anionic acrylic polymer emulsion, lightly crosslinked. As supplied, it’s a milky white, low-viscosity liquid that pours easily. When you add it to water and raise the pH above 5.5, it instantly swells into a clear, transparent gel with powerful thickening and suspending abilities.

The SF-1 type is the benchmark for liquid carbomers in personal care. SQ-Susper 40T is a product that meets the SF-1 specification:

Solid content: 28.5–31.5%

pH (25°C): 2.2–4.0

Viscosity (1% solids aqueous solution, 25°C): 2500–6000 mPa·s

No dust, no pre-hydration – just pump and pou

Body Soap Thickener – More Than Just Thickening

A great body soap thickener must do four things:

  1. Boost viscosity to a rich, pourable gel texture.
  2. Suspend insoluble ingredients – silicone droplets, zinc pyrithione (ZPT), pearlescent pigments, mica flakes, exfoliating beads.
  3. Maintain clarity even with surfactants (SLES, CAPB, etc.).
  4. Co-emulsify small amounts of fragrance or conditioning oils.

Traditional thickeners like salt (NaCl) work in simple formulas, but fail when electrolytes, fragrances, or pearlescent agents are added. In contrast, SF-1 liquid carbomer is a non-associative rheology modifier. It thickens via polymer chain entanglement – not surfactant micelles – so it has excellent electrolyte tolerance and shear-thinning behavior (thick when still, flows easily through a pump).

Hand Wash Thickener – Clarity, Light Feel, No Stringing

Hand wash formulas are demanding. Consumers want a crystal-clear product that foams richly but doesn’t drip off their hands. Cellulose gums often leave a slimy residue. Salt can cause cloudiness at low temperatures. SF-1 liquid carbomer solves both.

Recommended use level: 3–5% of total formula (giving 0.9–1.5% active polymer). Viscosity result: 2500–6000 mPa·s – ideal for pump bottles. The gel is perfectly clear, with a clean break (no stringing). Skin feel is light and non-sticky after rinsing. Moreover, SF-1 is compatible with alcohols, propylene glycol, and glycerol – common solvents in antibacterial hand washes. No clouding, no phase separation.

How to Use SF-1 Liquid Carbomer in Body Soap & Hand Wash

Using an SF-1 liquid carbomer is much easier than powder carbomer – no need to pre-make a gel stock. Here’s a standard cold or warm process:

  1. Add deionized water to the main vessel.
  2. Add SQ-Susper 40T (3–5% of formula). Mix well – the system stays a low-viscosity milky liquid.
  3. Add surfactants (SLES, CAPB, AOS, etc.). Continue mixing.
  4. If pearlescent agents or waxes are needed, heat to 60–70°C to melt them. The liquid carbomer acts as a co-emulsifier.
  5. Cool below 40°C, then neutralize with an alkaline agent (10% NaOH solution, TEA, or AMP-95) to pH 5.5–7.0. You’ll see instant thickening and clearing.
  6. Add fragrance, preservative, colorant, and salt (optional for fine-tuning viscosity). Mix evenly.

Troubleshooting:

Not clear enough → reduce electrolytes (salt, EDTA).

Insufficient suspension → increase SF-1 to 5–6%.  - Particles after neutralization → add alkali slowly, ensure uniform mixing before neutralizing.

Why Choose Liquid Carbomer -SQ-Susper 40T ?

  1. Formulator-friendly – No dust, easy pumping, no pre-dispersion.
